Born on this day: George Braith

btw - I saw George Braith a couple of months ago at The Fat Cat here in NYC. The most frustrating part of the evening was the fact that most of the people there had no idea who he was, and they were more interested in playing pool, talking about “the game” and looking at their iPhones. Motherfuckers, George Braith is playing literally a few feet away from you, and you’re sending texts and chatting about sports. Man, listen - it was depressing as hell. I’m still shaking my damn head. This is the guy who John Coltrane helped bring back from LA to NYC when Braith played some gigs with Freddie Hubbard. Trane wanted to play with him, so that says something. If Coltrane is willing to do that for somebody, the least you can do for them while they’re on stage is pay attention. That’s the least you can do. Also, shut the fuck up while you’re at it. I will never understand people who pay money to go to a jazz club only to act like boorish idiots by ignoring the musicians and proceed to talk loudly the entire time. Why? Didn’t you pay to see them? I’m so embarrassed for people sometimes. Were they raised by wolves? Where are their manners? How do they go around just acting like complete assholes all the time?
