Before Reid Miles, there was John Hermansader.
Hermansader was the designer for Blue Note records, before Miles took the reins to design LP covers that would later become iconic. The Reid Miles covers set the standard for album cover art in the music business, then and now.
However, as the saying goes, you can’t know where you’re going, unless you know where you’ve been. Hermansader might not have been as prolific as Miles, and history may have forgotten him, but he was a great designer. The Horace Silver LP above is one of his designs, and it no doubt set the blueprint that Reid Miles further expanded on.
A Modernist has a great write-up on Hermansader, along with some pictures of his designs. Click here to read it.
