Coltrane Plays the Blues is an album that was from the same recording sessions that produced the more popular My Favorite Things LP. Atlantic released it after Coltrane had left the label. Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner were already in the band at this point. Steve Davis was the bassist here. He would later be replaced by Reggie Workman, and later on, Jimmy Garrison, who along with Coltrane, Jones, and Tyner formed the legendary Coltrane quartet.
